
Stadel and Wells Nab Top Honors

A pair of second generation Rice rack and field athletes joined their fathers in earning Rice University's highest athletic honor as part of the first annual Night of the Owl Athletic Honor Banquet held on the floor of Autry Court on Wednesday Night.
Luke Stadel, who throws the shot and discuss, won the Bob Quin Award, joining his father Ken Stadel, who won the Quin in 1974. They are the first father and son duo to both earn the honor. Distance runner Calle Wells won the Joyce Pounds Hardy Award as Rice's outstanding female athlete. Her father, Jeff, won the Quin Award in 1976.

"R" Association scholarships went to Stadel and two other track and field athletes, Florence Nwagwu and Bahnsen Miller
In other women's awards, Carlyann Miller was honored with the Catherine Hannah Award as the most valuable swimmer; Tessa Kuykendall took the Hally Beth Poindexter Award in volleyball; Lauren Neaves received her second straight Gene Hackerman Award for women's basketball; and Amy McClintock took the soccer team's MVP trophy. Sports with ongoing seasons presented 2006 awards: Blair DiSesa won the Kay Pearson Keating Award for women's tennis; and Krystal Robinson took the Eva Jean Lee Award as that sport's MVP. Kate Gorry and Funmi Jimoh were recognized as the winners of the 2006 and 2007 Fred and Florence Stancliff Award for the outstanding senior athlete in track and field.
In men's sports, Morris Almond was named the outstanding athlete for men's basketball, winning the Billy Wohn Award for the second consecutive year; and Jarett Dillard took the George Martin Award as the most valuable Rice football player.
Awards were also presented in baseball, golf, tennis, and track and field for the 2006 season. The Dell Morgan Award honoring the baseball team's most valuable player went to Cole St. Clair; Parker LaBarge was honored with the Vic Cameron Award in golf; Robert Searle won his second consecutive Sammy Giammalva Award for tennis; and in track, Ryan Walsh won the Fred and Florence Stancliff Award while Jason Powell was awarded the Emmett Brunson Award.
Cheerleaders Ning Xue andLauren Hunt received the Tom Crumpton Memorial Award. The Rice Spirit Award was given to Angela Riggs, Director of Residential Dining. Student trainers Bobby Van Borssum and Amy Bissada received the Sports Medicine Award. In a new award, Soccer's Erin Scott and track's Shakera Reece were named Rice's Freshmen Athletes of the Year.
