Rice head golf coach Drew Scott, in attempting to play in this year's U.S. Open, cleared his first obstacle, by firing a 73 in a local qualifying event at the Glade Springs Resort (Cobb Course) in Daniels, W.Va., near Beckley. Scott also had to survive a two-hole playoff to be one of three out of 49 golfers to advance to a U.S. Open sectional qualfifier.
Playing in rainey-conditions, Scott found himself in a three-way tie with Jonathan Clark (Hurricane, W.Va.) and Aaron Summers (Radford University) for the two remaining spots after 18 holes. Each golfer made par on the first play-off hole and on the second hole Scott and Clark made par, while Summers made bogey. Robert Leckie of Charleston, W.Va. won the event with a 72.
"I hit the ball really well and was minus-three after the first six holes," says Scott. "I was able to give myself a lot of chances with five birdies and I knew I had chance heading into the last few holes and I able to hang in there."
Scott now competes at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, on June 5, a day after a PGA tour stop, The Memorial Tournament, is concluded. The sectional qualifying format calls for each golfer to play 18 holes at Double Eagle Golf Club and another 18 at the Lakes Country Club on the same day. Approximately 25 to 30 golfers from the Columbus sectional will advance to the 106th U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club (West Course) in Mamaroneck, N.Y. June 15-18.
