Palo Alto, Calif. -- The Rice Owls golf team completed day one of the U.S. Intercollegiate (Stanford Golf Course; par 70-6,742 yards) with a 611 score after a 304 in round one and 307 in round two in the 17-team field which had to play in poor weather conditions.
"I'm disappointed we didn't play better, says head coach Drew Scott. "It was a very challenging day with cold and rainey weather, but I feel like we could've done a better job of handling the adversity."
The Palo Alto area has endured several days of rain and the Stanford Golf Course became saturated and heavy growth in the rough. It was so saturated that Rice's Daniel Lee hit a tee shot down the fairway and lost it, even with the aide of a spotter on each side of the fairway, as the ball plugged into the ground.
Parker LaBarge led Rice on Saturday with a 150 (74-76 +10), while Addison Awe followed at 152 (78-74 +12).
The final round is schedule for Sunday with more rain in the forecast and temperature reaching a high of 60 degrees.
