Terre Haute, Ind. -
Staying true to pre-meet national rankings, the Rice women's cross country team placed 25th at the NCAA championships Monday at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. The Owls scored 598 points, and beat teams from Virginia, Georgetown, Tennessee, Marquette, Michigan State and Georgia. Stanford won the team title with 146 points, while Johanna Nilsson of Northern Arizona was the individual champion at 19:33.9.
Sophomore Marissa Daniels, making her second straight appearance at the national meet, was the top finisher for the Owls, crossing the line in 58th-place with a time of 20:57 for the six-kilometer course. Senior Kate Gorry, who also made her second nationals appearance, placed 79th in 21:13.
"We knew going in to this one that it would be very tough to be much higher than our pre-meet ranking," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "The conditions were pretty good and the team ran pretty well. This event is a super-tough competition, but our placing shows that we definitely belong here."
Callie Wells was the Owls' third finisher in 102nd-place at 21:26. The other Rice runners were Lea Garcia, 174th in 22:15, Sarah Yoder, 185th in 22:28, Laura Kelley, 196th in 22:48, and Anna Reeve, 198th in 22:51.
