Sanders Davis took over as the Owls' offensive line coach in March of 2020 after originally joining the staff in 2019 as an offensive graduate assistant.
In his fifth season on South Main in 2024, Davis re-tooled a unit that had to replace three starters to mesh with two returning starters who were both making position switches (Brant Banks from guard to right tackle and Ethan Onianwa from right tackle to the left side.
The 2024 Owls ended the regular season tied for seventh nationally, allowing only 11 sacks in 12 games (0.92 per game), their lowest total since moving to a passing-based offense in 2006. They finished the year allowing less than one sack per game for the first time since 2003, when they also allowed 11 in 12 games, but those 11 sacks came on just 128 attempts.
Davis came to Rice after five seasons at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he was the run game coordinator and offensive line coach, helping to guide the Bears to a pair of Division 1 state titles as well as a runner-up finish in 2018 in Louisiana’s highest classification. In addition to his football duties, Davis served as the head soccer coach, a strength coach, and an English teacher.
Davis was a standout lineman for the Bears before graduating in 2010. He played center at Dartmouth from 2010-13, graduating in 2014 and then returning home to Baton Rouge to teach and coach at his alma mater
