The Lead
After falling behind early to Navy, Rice made a late rally, scoring 10 points in the third quarter. But it was not enough, as the Owls saw their two-game win streak snapped Saturday afternoon, 21-13, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The Story
After Rice won the toss and deferred, Navy took the opening kickoff 75 yards, scoring on a fourth-and-two run by Luke Hutchison. After the Owls went three-and-out on their first two possessions, Alex Tezca's 65-yard run set up a Blake Horvath eight-yard touchdown to give Navy a 14-0 lead. Rice picked up its first, first down when Chase Jenkins four Braylen Walker for 11 yards. But the Owls were forced to punt. Navy took over at its 14-yard line and drove to the Rice 36. But the Owl defense stepped up, dropping the Midshipmen for two yards and forcing a punt. After Rice punted, Navy drove to the Rice 27. But, again, the Owls defense stood tall, stopping the Midshipmen on fourth-and-one. Rice took over at its own 29 and drove to the Navy 40. But on fourth-and-six, Quinton Jackson was stopped after a two-yard gain. Taking over with 10 seconds left, Navy needed just two plays to get into field goal position. But Nathan Kirkwood's 43-yard field goal attempt was wide left, and the Owls went into halftime trailing 14-0.
Rice punted to start the second half. Navy drove into Rice territory. But Plae Wyatt's first career interception gave Rice some momentum. The Owls drove 48 yards in 18 plays, including picking up a pair of fourth down conversions, before settling for an Enock Gota 35-yard field goal with 22 seconds to play in the third quarter. Navy responded by going 75 yards, capped by a Horvath two-yard run. Rice answered right back. Jenkins connected with Drayden Dickmann for 36 yards, then hit Dickmann on fourth down for a three-yard touchdown. The Owls forced a punt, then went 54 yards in 2:43 before Gota connected on a 44-yard field goal with 24 seconds remaining. But their onside kick attempt was recovered by the Midshipmen, and they ran out the clock.
