Experienced left-hander who can start or work from the bullpen... Determined to be a major contributor to the staff.
Wayne Graham said -- 'Tony made a huge jump in the fall in terms of his velocity, breaking ball, and control. He has a strong chance to be in the mix.'
Rice -- 2010: Started six games in first season at the Division I level, the fifth-highest total on the staff... The Owls won five of his six starts... Started the final game of the season-opening weekend series on the road against nationally-ranked Stanford... Earned first win a week later with 6.0 innings at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi... Threw a career-long 6.2 frames and tied a career-high with four strikeouts while allowing just two hits against Big 12 foe Texas Tech at the Houston College Classic held downtown at Minute Maid Park... The Owls rallied to win the game after he had already given-way to the bullpen... Made starts against NCAA Tournament-bound teams California and San Diego (on the road), as well as regional rival Sam Houston State... Averaged 5.3 strikeouts per 9.0 innings of work.
South Suburban College - Played the 2008 and 2009 seasons at South Suburban College in South Holland, Ill.... Coached by Steve Ruzich... Helped lead the Bulldogs to a 32-19 record and second place finish in the 2009 Junior College Region IV tournament... Went 5-4 on the mound with a 3.51 ERA in 69.1 innings of work in 2009... Registered a single-season school record 104 strikeouts, breaking a mark previously held by former Rice great and current major leaguer Tim Byrdak... Averaged 13.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings and maintained a 3.1-to-1 strikeouts to walks ratio... Set the school[apos]s career record for strikeouts, fanning 195 in 143.1 innings... Won seven games in 2008 to help lead the squad to the Region IV title.
High School - A 2007 graduate of Lincoln-Way Central High School in New Lenox, Ill.... Earned all-area and all-conference accolades for the Knights... Two-year varsity letterman... Named the team[apos]s most valuable player as a senior... Threw a no-hitter with 20 strikeouts against the state[apos]s top-ranked team in 2007... Coached by Marty Dykas... Outstanding student who was a member of the academic honor roll.
