Rick Karasch is currently responsible for overseeing the Strength and Conditioning of Rice’s 13 Olympic Sports. He is entering his eleventh season as the Strength and Conditioning coach for Rice Baseball, Women’s Tennis and Track & Field. While at Rice, Karasch has contributed to 22 conference championship seasons, worked with 10 All Americans, including five in Baseball, and 32 MLB Draft picks.
Rick Karasch’s goal as a Strength and Conditioning Coach at Rice is to both enhance athletic abilities respective to each sport and to increase each player’s durability. He employs a holistic and integrated approach that utilizes strength and power training, energy system development and movement training to develop more explosive, injury resilient athletes.
Karasch started his coaching career as a Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coach. After that he was a Sports Performance intern at Arizona State (under Joe Kenn), the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports at Scottsdale Community College and Director of Performance at Triple Threat Performance in Scottsdale, Arizona. While at Scottsdale Community College he was responsible for 17 Olympic Sports and worked directly with the Baseball team that made the final four in ’07 and runner up in ’09 at the NJCAA II Junior College World Series.
Karasch played Ice Hockey at the University of Arizona where he was the recipient of the Tommy Obermaier Award for Most Improved, the Tim O’Sullivan Award for Dedication and Perseverance and the Monica Huerta Allen Award for 110% Effort.
He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Health Sciences from the University of Arizona in 2005 and received a Master of Science in Human Movement from A.T. Still University in 2010. He is certified through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, USA Weightlifting, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and the Emergency Care & Safety Institute.
He is married to the former Martha Martinez and they have four daughters, Madeleine, Emily, Gabriella and Natalie.
