Men’s T&F Has Six Athletes Qualify for NCAA West Prelims

HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team will send six Owls to the NCAA West Prelims this week in Fayetteville, Ark. The four-day meet will begin on Wednesday, May 27.
Representing the Owls will be Juan Marais (discus), Ty Hampton and Jack Greaves (javelin), Sultan Bakare (hammer throw, shot put), Edward Bocock (400m hurdles) and Andrew Murray (3000m steeplechase).
Juan Marais holds the best seed for the men entering prelims, with his personal best mark from last week of 62.55m, sitting fourth in the region for discus.
The javelin duo of Hampton and Greaves enter with 74-meter throws this season. Hampton is sixth for the event, while Greaves is eighth.
Bakare qualified in two events, sitting 32nd in the hammer throw after his personal best 64-meter throw last week, while also ranking 34th in the shot put.
Freshman Edward Bocock earned a spot in the national first round for the 400m hurdles, with his time of 51.02, ranking 40th.
Murray also qualified for the meet in the 3000m steeplechase, with his time of 8:47.27 ranking 42nd.
The men are coming off a strong showing last weekend at the American Championships, where they finished fifth as a team. Marais claimed the discus title with a meet record throw of 62.55m, while Hampton and Greaves provided a 1-2 punch in the javelin. Bakare took second in the hammer throw, while Christian Edgar (110m hurdles) and Murray (3000m steeplechase) added podium visits in third.
The NCAA West Preliminary serves as the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Athletes with the 48 best marks in their region (east or west) qualify for the meet. The top 12 marks or times from each region will advance to the championship meet in Eugene, Oregon.
