Memphis Takes Series Opener
4/17/2026 10:47:00 PM | Baseball
Saturday's start moved up to 12:05
Houston- Memphis struck for three late runs to take the opener of the three-game series at Rice 4-1 and snap the Owls' five-game winning streak.
How it Happened: Rice took an immediate lead in the first as Colin Robson led off with a double and JC Davis drove him in with a single. But after a second-inning single by Jacob Devenny, Memphis starter Will Howell held the Owls hitless through the seventh, allowing his Tiger teammates to eventually break through. Rice starter Tanner Wiggins held the Tigers scoreless until the sixth, when Memphis tied the game on a two-out single. The Tigers took the lead on an unearned run in the seventh and added insurance in the eighth with a two-run homer. Robson broke a streak of 15 hitters retired when his sinking liner to center with one out in the eighth skipped off the glove for his second double of the game, but he could not advance any further.
Next Up: Saturday's start time has been moved up to 12:05 in anticipation of rain in the Houston area later in the day. Saturday's Beach Day promotion, with the first 75 fans receiving "Rice Guys" beach towels and the first 150 receiving "Rice Guys" beach towels, will go on as planned, as will the postgame showing of "Madagascar," weather permitting.
