Owls Drop Finale on Sunday
3/15/2026 4:41:00 PM | Baseball
Host UTRGV on Tuesday night
How it Happened: The Owls broke on top in the third with their eighth inning with at least three runs in the four games at Brazell Field. Hiram Bocachica Jr. stroked a single to left and moved to third on Colin Robson's fourth double of the weekend. JC Davis lofted a single to left to score Bocachica with the game's first run. Paul Smith loaded the bases with a walk and then Robson and Davis came home on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Garet Boehm and Kutter-Gage Webb. Sanders allowed back-to-back singles to open the third but picked both runners off base to end the Gaels' first scoring threat. In the fourth, the Gaels put a pair on with two outs, but Mason Ashlock turned what a appeared to be a line drive headed into the corner for extra bases and runs into an out with a diving stab to end the inning. Rice added two in the fifth thanks to back-to-back two-out doubles by Davis and Boehm and a single by Webb. The Owls added a sixth run when Robson's smash up the middle was flagged by SMC reliever Finn Chapman with runners and second and third with one out. Chapman threw home as Rios was attempting to score. In the ensuing rundown, Rios made it back to the bag and while the Gaels attempted to tag out trailing runner Cole Green, Rios dashed home to score. The Gaels turned the game around with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to seven hits in the inning. Rice rebounded to retake the lead in the top of the seventh on the Owls' third sacrifice fly of the day, this one courtesy Ashlock. Paul Smith's infield single increased the Rice lead to 8-6, but Saint Mary's exploded for five runs in the bottom of the eighth and the game was called due to travel curfew.
Next Up: Rice returns home for a quick check in and laundry stop, hosting UTRGV on Tue day at 6:35 before heading back on the road next weekend to open American Conference play at South Florida.
