Owls Host UTRGV on St. Patrick’s Day

ST. PATRICK'S DAY PIT STOP: Rice takes a brief break from an extended set of road games when the Owls host UTRGV on St. Patrick's Day at 6:35. They repack the suitcases on Wednesday for a three-game series to open the American Conference schedule against South Florida in Tampa followed by a game at HCU next Wednesday before they can settle in for a home series on March 27-29 against Florida Atlantic.
ON THE AIR: J.P. Heath will call the action on RiceOwls.com and the Varsity Network app as well as via simulcast on ESPN+ on Tuesday.
713 NIGHT: Tuesday's game is another 713 Night ($7 tickets, $1 hotdogs, $3 beer) with the added attraction of the first 200 fans who purchase drinks at The Roost receiving a green souvenir Rice Baseball Cup.

GETTING OFFENSIVE ON THE ROAD: Rice has gone 6-3 in the first nine games of the extended stretch away from Reckling Park. The Owls opened the stretch with a 4-1 at Lamar, moved on to take two of three at Abilene Christian and after a loss to Houston last Tuesday, exploded for 43 runs in four games in Phoenix, Arizona against Saint Mary's and Grand Canyon. Rice opened the weekend by being held hitless through the first four innings in the opener vs. Saint Mary's, then rallied to tie the game at 2, and then again in the bottom of the eighth with three runs after the Gaels took the lead with three of their own in the of the inning. After a scoreless top of the ninth, Garet Boehm singled home Zachary Daigre with a walkoff winner. Rice wasted little time taking control in the nightcap vs. Grand Canyon, scoring seven times in the first two innings and adding nine more to win 16-5, then completed a sweep of the Antelopes the following night with a 13-2 win. Rice hit .338 in the four games (45x133), including 17 doubles, and added 27 walks, while eight Owls reached base after being hit by a pitch.
OWLS AND VAQUEROS: This will be the third meeting between the schools since UTRGV was created from a merger of UT-Brownsville and UT-Pan American in 2014. The Vaqueros won for the first time against Rice under the current designation last year, 20-5 and lead the overall series 30-29-1. The series between the schools ended in 1992 until 2023 when Rice won 14-3… Rice defeated UT-Pan American 6-5 on 1/31/92 to give Wayne Graham the first of his 1,173 wins at Rice… Rice has a 20-10 lead in series games on its campus and Bixby Family Head Baseball Coach David Pierce is 6-2 vs. UTRGV, all during his time at Texas.
