HOUSTON – The Rice women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to Washington on Saturday in Waco.
The Huskies opened the match by securing the doubles point. Reece Carter and Jermine Sherif defeated Daniela Chica and Fernanda Martinez 6-1, and Washington clinched the point when Erika Matsuda and Carina Syrtveit topped Uma Bakaityte and Darya Schwartzman 6-3. Ema Mravcova and Divna Ratkovic were trailing 4-3 on court two when doubles play was halted.
In singles action, Ratkovic earned Rice's lone point with a quick 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alexia Jacobs on court three. Washington responded as Syrtveit defeated Martinez 7-6, 6-4 on court six to regain the lead. Francesca Maguina fell to Sherif in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, before the Huskies clinched the match on court two when Carter defeated Bakaityte 6-4, 7-6.
Play was ongoing on the remaining courts when the match was decided. Schwartzman was trailing 6-3, 5-6 on court one, while Nithesa Selvaraj was tied 3-3 in the second set on court four after dropping the first set 7-6.
The Owls return to action at home Feb. 14 at 11 a.m. against UTSA at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
