WACO – The Rice women's tennis team edged Baylor 4-3 on Friday in Waco, securing its first win over the Bears since a 5-4 victory on April 20, 1995.
The Owls claimed the early advantage by taking the doubles point. Divna Ratkovic and Ema Mravcova opened doubles play with a 6-0 win over Kennedy Gibbs and Alain Zack. Rice then secured the point when Francesca Maguina and Danela Chica defeated Neda Rahimkhani and Gabrielle Villegas 6-3. Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte were trailing 5-3 on court one when play was halted.
Baylor struck first in singles as Zuzanna Kubacha topped Bakaityte 6-3, 6-2. Rice responded when Nithesa Selvaraj earned the Owls' first singles point with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mu-Jie Tzeng. Ratkovic followed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Gibbs on court three. Baylor picked up another point as Dong defeated Schwartzman 6-3, 6-2 on court one.
The Bears stayed alive with a three-set win by Luna Ivkovic over Fernanda Martinez, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. Maguina then clinched the match for Rice, defeating Zack 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 on court four.
The Owls return to action on Saturday when they face No. 23 Washington in Waco at noon.
