
Rice Extends Win Streak to 10; Holds Off UNT

DENTON – The Rice women's basketball team held on for a tough road win over North Texas 58-54 Saturday afternoon at The Super Pit. The Owls earn their 10th consecutive win to move to 15-3 (5-0 American), while North Texas has its three-game win streak snapped to fall to 10-8 (4-2 American).
Victoria Flores led the Owls with 16 points, four steals and a rebound, while Shelby Hayes added 10 points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist.
As a team, Rice shot 20-of-54 (37%) from the floor and 6-of-20 (30%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 12-of-16 (75%) display from the free throw line. Rice forced 18 UNT turnovers, leading to 21 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED,
First Quarter
Hayes opened the scoring with a layup before back-to-back UNT scores put the Mean Green ahead. Flores evened the score with a jumper, with Dominique Ennis following with a three-pointer. Rice led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
Louann Battiston got the Owl offense going with a triple out of the break, later adding a layup as Rice grabbed a 10-point lead. With the lead down to five, Flores scored off her own steal to extend the lead to seven. Leading by six, Jordin Blackmon converted another steal for points to push the lead to eight. The Owls led 28-23 at the half.
Third Quarter
Hailey Adams swapped scores with UNT to open the third, with Alexis behind with a triple to take a 10-point lead. Flores pushed the lead up to 12 before the Mean Green responded with consecutive scores. Leading by eight, Flores sank a three to extend the lead back to double digits. Up nine, Hayes hit a layup to give Rice a 44-33 lead at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
A 7-0 North Texas run opened the fourth to cut the deficit to four points before Ennis drilled another three. With the lead back down to four, Flores hit a triple to extend the lead again. Leading by a pair, Flores and Adams got the lead up to 56-51 with 2:20 to go. The Mean Green got within two, but free throws by Ennis in the closing seconds sealed the Rice win.
