• This is the 14th meeting in the series, with Rice leading 7-6, and the fifth at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium (tied 2-2).
• Last season, Rice won the first meeting between the schools since 2009, 24-10 at Rice Stadium on Homecoming in a game that was originally scheduled to kick off at 3:05 p.m. but did not start until 5:30 due to lightning in the area and was delayed three times once it began (5:06 total) and finished at 11:25 p.m.
• The win by Rice snapped a four-game winning streak for Navy in the series.
• This is the first trip to Annapolis for Rice since 2004 when Navy won 14-13.
• Rice rallied from down 14-0 after three quarters to close to within a point on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Joel Armstrong to Ed Bailey with 4:14 remaining, but the Owls missed the PAT and Navy hung on for the win.

- Rice has opened the season 3-1 for the first time since 2001, when the Owls won six of the first seven.
- Scott Abell has opened his career at Rice 3-1, the first coach to have three wins in the first four games of his career at Rice since Bo Hagan was 3-1 in 1967 after replacing Jess Neely. The last first-year head coach at Rice to open 4-1 was Neely, who opened the 1940 season 5-1.
- The Owls are 8-9 all-time in the American and their eight conference wins rank second among the six former C-USA schools who joined the conference in 2023 (UTSA 11-5; Rice 8-9; North Texas 7-10; Charlotte 6-11; UAB 5-12; Florida Atlantic 4-12).
