HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team will have a strong group representing the Owls at the NCAA West Preliminary starting Wednesday, May 28, with six athletes qualifying for the meet. The meet will be hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
Representing the Owls will be Cal Abdulky (hammer throw), Gus Gannon (3000m steeplechase), Juan Marais (discus), Augustus Henry, Jack Greaves and Aryan Padaruth (javelin).
Rice is coming off a solid outing at the AAC Championships, amassing 78 points to finish sixth as a team, just four points off of third place. Henry claimed the javelin title while Gannon and Marais were runners-up in their qualifying events.
Gannon broke the school record in the steeplechase earlier this season and will enter the meet seeded 28th in the region. He finished 31st at last year's preliminary meet.
In his freshman season, Marais enters the prelim meet seeded 16th and earned All-AAC honors with his second-place showing in the discus. Cal Abdulky is seeded 34th for the hammer throw, also earning All-AAC honors with a third-place showing in the conference meet.
The javelin trio for the Owls all rank inside the top 25 for the event, with Padaruth leading the way in ninth. Padaruth finished 35th at last year's prelims and was sixth at the conference meet. Greaves qualifies for the prelim round, seeded 13th in his freshman campaign. Henry is seeded 23rd coming off the AAC javelin title last week.
The NCAA West Preliminary meet is one of two regional events, which serve as the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Athletes qualify for the competition by having one of the top 48 best marks of the region (East or West) in their respective events. In order to advance to the final round in Eugene, Oregon, an athlete must finish among the top 12 (per region) in their respective events.
