
Owls Ready for 42nd Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON – The Rice Owls men's track & field team will have the first of their two home meets of the season this weekend with the 42nd annual Victor Lopez Classic at Wendel D. Ley Track. The three-day meet will start on Thursday for the high school portion, with the college competition running Friday and Saturday.

Tickets for this year's meet will be sold at the door and will be cashless. Parking will be in West Lot 4.
In total, the Owls will have 30 athletes competing in 16 events. Colleges competing this weekend along with Rice are Arkansas, Columbia, Dallas Baptist, Houston, Houston Christian, Lamar, Louisiana, Loyola-New Orleans, McNeese State, North Texas, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Southern, Texas Wesleyan and UT-Arlington.
Last time out, Elliot Metcalf claimed the event title in the 1500m, with freshman Marcus Gaitan finishing right behind in second. William Thames had a great showing with a second-place finish in the 800m.
In the hammer throw, Cal Abdulky grabbed the title with a throw of 61 meters. Daniel Sowell and Sultan Bakare both climbed into the top 10 for the event with 53m-plus throws. Bakare also moved into ninth all-time in the shot put with a throw of 17.05m.
Over in the discus, Juan Marais finished second in his debut with a distance of 55.70m, ranking sixth all-time at Rice
