Rice Drops Road Finale at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UTSA used a 16-3 run midway through the second half, as Rice fell 84-56, Sunday night from the UTSA Convocation Center.
The Story
Both teams struggled to start the game, each going 2-of-10 from the field. Damari Monsanto made two straight three-pointers for the Roadrunners, but a layup from Andrew Akuchie tied the game at 12. The teams then traded baskets before Caden Powell made a layup and one-of-two from the free throw line to give Rice a 17-16 lead. After Primo Spears made a layup and Jonnivius Smith hit one-of-two free throws, Jimmy Oladokun, Jr., got an offensive rebound and laid it in to tie the game at 19 with 4:09 to play. However, Rice missed five of its last six shots, while UTSA made four of its last five to close the half on a 12-4 run and take a 31-23 lead into the break.
Rice scored six of the first eight points of the second half to pull within four. But UTSA scored five straight. Jacob Dar made two free throws, and Akuchie made a layup. However, the Roadrunners scored seven of the next nine points. After Alem Huseinovic made one-of-two free throws, Powell hit a layup to cut the deficit to seven with 12:54 to play. But the Roadrunners sealed the game with a 16-3 run over the next 4:04 to push its lead to 61-41.

Rice was held to 34.4% (21-of-61) from the field, and 18.2% (4-of-22) from three. UTSA connected on 47.5% (29-of-61) from the floor, 43.8% (14-of-32) from three, and 80.0% (12-of-15) from the free throw line. Rice outrebounded the Roadrunners, 42-to-37.
