No. 43 Rice Claims 5-2 Victory Over No. 69 Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The 43rd-ranked Rice women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over the 69th-ranked Columbia Lions on Saturday in New York. The win improves Rice to 11-4 while Columbia falls to 8-5 and snaps its three-match winning streak.
Columbia came out as the aggressors in the doubles point, taking early leads on all three courts. The Lions duo of Baek and Wang took down Divna Ratkovic and Valentina Ponce on the third line, 6-1, followed by Krishnan and Strugnell taking down 80th-ranked Saara Orav and Francesca Maguina at the second line, 6-3, clinching the doubles point.
Rice would flip the script in singles, with five of the six courts winning their first sets. Darya Schwartzman was the first to finish with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to tie the match at 1-1. Maguina would give Rice the lead with a 7-5, 6-2, victory at the third line/ Columbia would tie the match very briefly with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Allison Zipoli at the fifth line, but Ratkovic's win at the second like, 6-4, 6-3, would put the Owls back up at 3-2.
Nithesa Selvaraj would have the clinching point in the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the fourth line, putting the Owls up at 4-2. The final match of the sixth line was nearly finished when this occurred, to the two final competitors would play their final set out, with Fernanda Martinez taking down her opponent 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, to earn Rice's fifth point and close the day with an emphatic victory.
Rice will return to action on Friday, March 21, to take part in a doubleheader with the men's tennis team at Memphis.
