
Owls Fall in Back-and-Forth Contest at Wichita State

WICHITA – The Rice women's basketball team fell on the road to Wichita State 60-57 Saturday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena. The Owls fall to 12-13 (5-8 AAC) while the Shockers move to 9-18 (3-11 AAC).
Dominique Ennis led the Owls with her first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while adding an assist and a steal. Malia Fisher added 14 points, nine rebounds, two steals, two blocks and an assist. Aniah Alexis rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, three assists and two rebounds.
As a team, Rice shot 22-of-60 (36.7%) from the floor and 7-of-17 (41.2%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 6-of-8 (75%) showing from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Wichita State scored the game's first four points before Ennis got the Owls on the board with a triple. Down three, back-to-back layups from Sussy Ngulefac and Fisher put the Owls in front. Ennis and Victoria Flores later continued the run to give the Owls a five-point lead. Still leading by five, Ennis drilled another three to extend the Rice lead. The Owls led 18-12 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter
A 7-0 Shocker run opened the second quarter before Alexis got Rice back on the board. Trailing by four points, Fisher hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one. After Wichita State took a six-point lead, Fisher closed the half with four straight points as the Owls trailed 29-27 at halftime.
Third Quarter
Fisher got the offense going in the third with a jumper, with Alexis following with a layup and three to give Rice a 34-29 lead. After a Wichita State triple cut the lead to two, Ngulefac's layup extended the lead to four. After a run gave WSU the lead, Shelby Hayes put the Owls back in front with a layup. The Shockers led 41-40 at the end of quarter three.
Fourth Quarter
After a WSU score made it a three-point game, Ennis sank a three to tie things back up. Down by two, Ennis answered again to even the score. The Shockers extended their lead to three before Alexis cut the deficit down to one. Down three again, Fisher hit a three to tie the game with 2:07 remaining. Two baskets by Wichita State made it a four-point Rice deficit. Still down by four, Ennis hit a three with nine seconds remaining making it a one-point game. Free throws down the stretch would keep the lead with Wichita State as the Shockers went on to win.

Ennis recorded her 150th career three-pointer during the game.
Ennis moved into third all-time in career threes at Rice with 152.
Fisher entered the top 10 for Rice all-time in career rebounds at 710 (tied for ninth).
