
Rice’s Rally Falls Short at Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON – The Rice women's basketball team fell on the road 66-61 at Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. Rice drops to 12-10 (5-5 AAC), while Florida Atlantic improves to 10-13 (2-8 AAC).
Dominique Ennis led the Owls with 15 points, with five three-pointers, while adding three rebounds and two steals. Malia Fisher added 14 points, a career-high nine assists, two rebounds and a block.
As a team, Rice shot 25-of-67 (37.3%) from the floor and 8-of-26 (30.8%) from three-point range. Rice was 3-of-4 (75%) from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Ennis opened the game's scoring with a corner three and later hit another triple as Rice took an early 6-2 lead. Leading by one, Ennis drilled her third three of the quarter as the two sides kept trading baskets. Shelby Hayes later pushed the Rice lead to four points, but Florida Atlantic got the final score with a three to make it a 15-14 Rice lead.
Second Quarter
Sussy Ngulefac got the offense rolling in the second, with the home Owls responding with a 6-0 run to take a 20-17 lead. Victoria Flores tied the game with a three, with Fisher following with a basket to regain the lead. With Rice trailing by three, Fisher's layup cut the deficit to one, with Flores hitting another three to take a two-point lead. Florida Atlantic led 32-31 at halftime.
Third Quarter
FAU pushed its lead to six points before Fisher and Flores brought Rice back within two. Down by six again, Aniah Alexis' layup, followed by another Ennis three, made it a one-point game. Florida Atlantic closed the third on a 7-0 run to take a 54-46 lead.
Fourth Quarter
Jill Twiehaus opened the final frame with a three, with Fisher's layup following as Rice cut the deficit down to three. Another FAU run extended its lead to 13 points before Ennis snapped the run with a three. Down by nine, back-to-back scores by Hailey Adams and Fisher made it a 64-59 game with 1:08 remaining. The home Owls would close out the game as Rice fell 66-61.
