
Rice Drops Second Straight in Overtime to Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast scored the first 13 points of the extra period as Rice lost in overtime for the second straight game of the Coconut Hoops, 78-63, Tuesday night from Alico Arena.
The Story
The opened the game each scoring before Cam Carroll hit a three to send the Owls on a 7-0 run, as FGCU missed nine of its first 10 shots. The Eagles got back-to-back a layups, but Eternity Eguagie hit a basket, sending Rice on a 10-1 run over a five minute span to take a 19-7 lead. After a Florida Gulf Coast layup, the teams traded free throws before Jalen Smith gave Rice its largest lead of the half, 24-11, with a three-pointer. But threes from Gabe Tanner and Darren Williams cut Rice's lead to 24-17 at the half.
Jimmy Oladokun, Jr. and Trae Broadnax scored eight of Rice's first 10 points in the second half as it opened a 34-21 lead through the first 3:17. But FGCU's Jordan Ellerbe got hot, making three straight threes to propel the Eagles to a 14-4 run over the next three minutes to pull within three. After trading baskets, Florida Gulf Coast went on a 10-4 run, capped by three free throws from J.R. Konieczny that tied the game at 49. A jumper by Broadnax helped the Owls score six of the next seven points, taking a five-point lead with 4:12 remaining. After the Eagles cut the lead to one, they traded baskets. Eternity Eguagie layup gave Rice a 59-56 lead with 1:16 to play. Rahmir Barno made one-of-two free throws. Broadnax missed a three, and Ellerbee went the length of the court for a layup to tie the game. Rice had one more chance to win it, but Broadnax's jumper was off the mark, sending Rice to its second straight overtime game.
Rice struggled out of the gate to start overtime. Oladokun and Eguagie missed layups, and FGCU got consecutive putbacks, giving the Eagles their first lead of the game. After Rory Stewart made two free throws, Carroll and Broadnax each missed threes. Ellerbe made a layup, and Konieczny hit a three giving Florida Gulf Coast a 13-0 run to start the extra period and a 72-59 lead. Nick Anderson made four straight free throws, but FGCU made eight straight to close the game.

Florida Gulf Coast connected on 39.7% (23-of-58) from the floor, 44.4% (8-of-18) from three, and 72.7% (24-of-33) from the free throw line. Rice was also outrebounded, 45-to-38.
