
Rice Closes Coconut Hoops with Dominant 81-62 Victory over Oral Roberts

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Nick Anderson scored 17 of his season-high 22 points in the second half, and Jalen Smith recorded his first career double-double, as Rice closed Coconut Hoops with an 81-62 victory over Oral Roberts, Wednesday night at Alico Arena.
The Story
Smith made a jumper to start the game. But Rice missed its next six shots, as Oral Roberts went on an 8-2 run. But Smith and Trae Broadnax got hot, each making a pair of three-pointers in a 16-5 Rice run. The Owls missed nine of its next 10 shots. But, ORU couldn't take advantage, as Rice made five-of-six free throws to keep the lead. With Rice holding a 25-21 lead, Anderson hit a corner three, and Smith hit a jumper in the paint. Two straight baskets brought the Golden Eagles within five. However, a three from Broadnax sent the Owls on an 11-1 run to take their largest lead of the half, 41-26. After trading threes, Connor Dow's three right before the buzzer sent Rice into halftime leading, 44-32.
Rice continued its strong play in the second half, opening on a 12-4 run over the first four minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 56-36. Two free throws sent Oral Roberts on a 10-4 run, but four straight points by Andrew Akuchie push Rice's lead back to 18. A three from Luke Gray started an 11-4 run that cut Rice's deficit to 68-57 with 5:56 to play. But Smith hit a three, then Anderson scored eight straight points, to put the game away.

"That was a good week. It was a great way to cap off what I though was a week of tremendous growth for our team. We played together. We played tough, hard-nosed defense. We didn't close out the first two games, but I thought we did a great job finishing this game. Our defense really stepped up in the second half."
