PREVIEW: Owls Head to Fort Worth for ITA Texas Women's Regional

HOUSTON —The Rice women's tennis team will travel to Fort Worth this week to compete in the ITA Women's Texas Regional Championship, scheduled for Oct. 9–14.
Competition begins Thursday with qualifying singles action. Three Owls will take the court in the early rounds: Daniela Chica opens play at 8 a.m. against UTSA's Milica Milosavljevic, while Ema Mravcova will face Diana Kaibara of UT Arlington at the same time. Valentina Ponce is slated to follow at 9:30 a.m. against Vanja Cado, also of UTA.
Main draw singles begin Friday, with six Rice players competing in first-round matches. Anushka Ashar will take on Estefania Gonzalez of Incarnate Word at 12:30 p.m., while Nithesa Selvaraj faces Valeriia Krokhotina of Houston. Later in the afternoon, Darya Schwartzman is set to meet Masha Vrsalovic of Abilene Christian, and Francesca Maguina will play Ksenia Mamontova of Stephen F. Austin. Both matches are scheduled for 2 p.m. Divna Ratkovic will also play at that time, taking on TCU's Tomi Main. Uma Bakaityte is also set to compete in singles, with her first-round opponent and time still to be determined.
In doubles, the Owls will debut four pairings Friday morning. Schwartzman and Bakaityte, as well as Ratkovic and Ashar, received first-round byes and will begin play at 9:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., respectively. Their opponents have yet to be announced.
Maguina and Selvaraj will open doubles action at 8 a.m. against UTSA's Celine Absawi and Aoka Nagasawa. Mravcova and Chica follow at 8:45 a.m. against Alexandra Mille and Luciana Paez of Incarnate Word.
