HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's tennis team prepares for two matches in two days, as the Owls invite the Arizona Wildcats and the TCU Horned Frogs to the confines of the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Friday, January 31, and Saturday, February 1. Both matches will begin at 12 p.m.
Rice and Arizona last met on a neutral court in Tempe, Arizona, back in March of 2022. In that match, the Wildcats narrowly defeated the Owls by a final score of 4-3. Rice and TCU have met more recently, meeting in College Station a year ago. In that match, the Horned Frogs defeated the Owls 4-1.
This is Rice's first match since Darya Schwartzman was named the American Athletic Conference's women's tennis Player of the Week. She earned the distinction by going 4-0 during last week's action, winning two matches at the No. 1 position in doubles and two matches from the same position in singles.
Fernanda Martinez holds two clinchers through the first three matches this season. She clinched both matches against Lamar and Incarnate Word last week. She joins Nithesa Selvaraj as the only Owls with clinching victories so far this season.
In addition to Arizona and TCU, San Diego will also be joining in on the action this weekend. However, the Toreros will only be playing Arizona on Saturday. That match is slated to begin at 12 p.m. and will be played on courts 7 - 12, while Rice vs. TCU will be on courts 1 - 6.
