HOUSTON – Shelley Pennington and Friends Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds announced the non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2024-25 Rice women's basketball season, including games against six postseason teams from last season and three Power-4 opponents.
The Owls are coming off a historic 2023-24 season, highlighted by being crowned champions of the American Athletic Conference in the team's debut season, the first-ever AAC title for Rice Athletics. Rice secured its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history, where the Owls fell to the then-defending national champion LSU in a hard-fought 70-60 defeat.
The 2024-25 season marks the fourth season at Rice for Edmonds.
"I am happy to announce our non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 season," Edmonds said. "The core that we are returning from last season will give us an opportunity to showcase our maturity, while allowing us to continue to build upon the success we experienced last year. We are looking forward to competing against three Power-4 schools along with a handful of highly competitive mid-major programs, six of which made it to postseason play this past year. We know how tough American Athletic Conference play is and this non-conference slate will position us to compete against every opponent we face."
Rice will host Lubbock Christian for an exhibition game on Oct. 29, before opening the 2024-25 campaign against the reigning Summit League champion and NCAA Tournament team, South Dakota State on Nov. 4 at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Owls will then welcome North Carolina A&T, another postseason team from last season after advancing to the WNIT Elite 8, on Nov. 7.
The home slate continues with South Alabama on Nov. 11 before welcoming crosstown rival Houston on Nov. 14. Rice concludes the five-game homestand on Nov. 17 against Sam Houston.
Rice will then hit the road on Nov. 21 against a NCAA Elite 8 team from last season at Gonzaga, who finished last season ranked 14th in the AP Poll.
The Owls will travel to Cancun, Mexico, during the Thanksgiving week to take part of the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 28-30. Rice will square off against Big XII opponent BYU and WNIT Fab 4 team from last year, Vermont.
Rice will return to the states for a home matchup against Utah Tech on Dec. 4 and will after travel to Louisiana on Dec. 7.
The final home non-conference game will be on Dec. 13 against Texas Southern for the Schoolhouse Mania game before the final game of the non-conference slate on Dec. 18 against a WBIT team from last season at Georgia Tech.
The AAC announced conference opponents last week, with the full schedule to be released at a later time.
