HOUSTON – Shelley Pennington and Friends Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds announced the addition of Jalen Latta to the Rice women's basketball staff ahead of the 2024-25 season. Latta will serve an assistant coach and the Director of Player Development.
"I am very excited to welcome Jalen to South Main as an assistant coach. Jalen is a young man that I have known for years, and I have had the pleasure of observing his climb through the ranks towards becoming a college basketball coach," Edmonds said. "Throughout his time at NC State and Campbell, he has had the opportunity to wear a lot of different hats, and I have no doubt that he is ready for this next step in his journey. Jalen's energy and work ethic, paired with his love for being in the gym, will greatly contribute to the development of our student-athletes on the court. I cannot wait to witness the tremendous impact that I know he will have on our program."
"I am pleased and proud to be here at Rice University. This opportunity is truly an answered prayer, and for that, I'm grateful," Latta said. "This program is also special to me because it reconnects Coach Edmonds and I. While working under her as a student manager at NC State, I learned so much and I have no doubt the same will happen here. I'm excited to get in the gym and use my experience and knowledge of the game to help elevate our team to the next level. Owls Nation, let's go!"
Latta will join the Owls after previously spending a season at Campbell as the Director of Operations/Director of Player Development. This past season, Latta helped guide the Camels to a 17-14 record in the team's first season in the CAA. Before arriving to Campbell, Latta was a graduate assistant and student manager at NC State, where he spent time with Coach Edmonds while he was a student manager.
With the Wolfpack, he assisted with recruiting efforts, workouts and practice plans, film, scouting reports and provided daily scheduling updates to all players and support staff.
Latta earned a master's degree in sport, communication and leadership in 2023 from NC State and his bachelor's degree in sport management in 2021, also from NC State.
