SAN ANTONIO – The Rice men's track and field team had another fantastic showing at day two of the AAC Championships, with six athletes scoring points and another advancing to tomorrow's finals. Rice currently sits atop the team standings heading into the final day of competition.
The Owls made a splash in the steeplechase, with Gus Gannon and Andrew Murray providing a 2-3 punch in the race. Grant Samara added another point for Rice with an eighth-place finish in the race.
In the decathlon, Vincent Arousell secured a trip to the podium with a second-place finish. Luke Ivy also grabbed a point in the event with an eighth-place finish.
Sam Welsh added points for the Owls in the shot put, finishing fourth after a personal best throw of 17.65m.
In the prelims, Christian Edgar was the fourth Owl to advance to the finals, reaching the finals of the 110m hurdles.
Day One Reaction - Head Coach Jon Warren
"This was pretty much as good of a day two as I can remember. Sam threw a personal best, but it turn out that competition is insane. The decathlon was great with Vincent in second and Luke in eighth, with personal bests all throughout for them both. Christian made the finals, which is what we were hoping for him, so we will see what he is able to do tomorrow. Steeple ran especially well, going 2-3 with Gus and Andrew, and Grant coming in for another point in eighth. Looking forward to tomorrow, we are very happy with the events left, including high jump and pole vault. It should be a very exciting day."
