
Abdulky, Hampton Grab Titles; Owls Lead at AACs

SAN ANTONIO – The Rice men's track and field team opened the AAC Outdoor Championships in grand style, scoring in all three events and claiming two event titles. The Owls currently sit in first place as a team at the end of day one.
Cal Abdulky claimed the first event title for Rice in the hammer throw with a distance of 65.65m. Teammate Shaun Kerry finished right behind in second with a throw of 64.92m.
The Owls provided another 1-2 punch over at the javelin competition, with Ty Hampton recording his best throw in two years with a distance of 75.54m, while Aryan Padaruth had a personal best throw of 67.70m to finish second.
Over on the track, Travis Dowd grabbed the first point for the Owls with an eighth-place finish in the 10,000m to open the meet.
In the prelims, Rice had three athletes advance to the finals in the 1500m, with Elliot Metcalf, Gus Gannon and Jackson Moran all making the finals on Sunday.

"Couldn't have imagined a better start to the meet. We went 1-2 in the javelin and 1-2 in the hammer throw and that is an incredible start. Also, we scored a point in the 10K. We had three advance to the finals in the 1500m, and hopefully, we can keep this going throughout the rest of the meet."
