Women's Tennis Sweeps No. 51 South Florida, 4-0

MIAMI, Florida — Rice women's tennis recorded its third sweep of an ITA-ranked opponent this season, defeating No. 51 South Florida, 4-0, on Saturday at the FIU Tennis Courts.
Doubles: The Owls started off in the match with a pair of 6-4 wins at both the first and second positions of doubles play. Graduate senior Chie Kezuka and senior Federica Trevisan won at the top spot, extending their unbeaten streak to six matches, while junior Saara Orav and sophomore Darya Schwartzman won at the second position to clinch the doubles point for Rice.
Singles: With a 1-0 advantage to start singles play, the Owls swiftly clinched the victory with a trio of straight-set victories. At the first position, Trevisan doubled Rice's lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Orav matched the exact same scoreline at the fifth position to put the Owls on the verge of victory. Freshman Nithesa Selvaraj earned the privilege of the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 6s. Ratkovic was close behind at the third position having built a 6-3, 5-4 lead and at the second position, Schwartzman had battled back after dropping the first set to win a second-set tiebreak, 7-6 (6), and force a decisive third set at the time the winning point was clinched.
Head coach Elizabeth Schmidt: "Just really a hard-fought total team effort. I'm proud of the team for how they rebounded quickly from yesterday and how everyone stepped up today to play solid tennis and put up a great fight from start to finish."
