
Men's Tennis Set for Senior Day Versus Creighton, Road Match at UTSA

In Brief: Rice men's tennis returns to the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Saturday, April 13, at 11 a.m. (CT) to celebrate senior day against Creighton. Rice will celebrate the careers of Yasha Zemel and Trinity Grear as part of the match. Rice will then conclude the regular season at UTSA on Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m. (CT) in a match that had previously been postponed due to weather.

Match Info: The Owls will celebrate Senior Day at the George R. Brown Tennis Center against Creighton. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT) and is free admission. Live video and results will also be available for the match. The Owls will then head to San Antonio to take on UTSA at the UTSA Tennis Center. Live results for the match will be provided via UTSA athletics.
Rice will celebrate the careers of Trinity Grear and Yasha Zemel as part of Senior Day. In four seasons at Rice, Grear has tallied 103 total victories with records of 53-43 and 50-39 in singles and doubles play, respectively. Grear was named to the All-Conference USA Singles and Doubles second teams in 2023 and is a three-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. He earned the Sammy Giammalva Award as the team's MVP in 2023.
Yasha Zemel joined the Owls in 2022 after a pair of seasons at Kentucky where he compiled 30 total wins, including 10-6 and 9-5 marks in singles and doubles play to help Kentucky reach the national championship match. Across four years, Zemel has career records of 31-31 and 34-22 in singles and doubles play, respectively. He was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2022 and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete, C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll member and Academic Medalist in 2023.
The Owls: Rice saw their eight-match winning streak snapped in a 4-1 defeat to to #41 Arkansas on Monday at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center. The match had been moved from the George R. Brown Tennis Center due to weather. Junior Arthus de la Bassetiere delivered Rice's lone point of the match with a straight-sets win at the third position. Despite forcing a total of four tiebreaks and sending two matches to three sets, the Owls were unable to close the distance on the Razorbacks. Rice's match at UTSA on Sunday, April 14, was postponed due to weather delays and lighting conditions.
The Opposition: Rice and Creighton will meet for the first time in program history on Saturday. The Owls have met only one current Big East squad previously, falling to St. John's, 4-3, on March 3, 2014. The Bluejays are 13-6 this season and currently hold a six-match winning streak.
The Owls hold a 20-6 all-time mark against UTSA, including wins in each of the previous two meetings. The Owls are also 2-1 in San Antonio against the Roadrunners. Rice won the first 11 meetings in the series and holds an 8-5 record against UTSA since the two became conference rivals when the Roadrunners joined C-USA in 2014. UTSA is 9-8 this season and has scored wins over Utah (twice), Wichita State and No. 62 Oregon.
