Fernandez, Mayo and Rodriguez hold Panthers in check
Reckling Park: Robert Fernandez, Jackson Mayo, and Mauricio Rodriguez combined on a two-hitter while Manny Garza led an 11-hit attack with three hits as Rice downed Prairie View A&M 6-1 at Reckling Park on Tuesday night.
The Details: The Panthers struck first on a leadoff homer off Fernandez to open the second inning, but the junior from Miami only allowed two walks over his remaining three innings of work while his Owls teammates swiftly erased that early deficit with two runs in the bottom of the second. Trenton Rank doubled with one out and Landon West followed with a walk. Ben Royo singled home Rank to tie the game and West and Royo moved up to second and third on the throw. Max Johnson lifted a fly ball to right allowing West to score and put Rice ahead to stay. After Jackson May took over for Fernandez in the fifth and retired the side on a pair of strikeouts, Rice extended the lead to 4-1 on a two-run double by Nathan Becker. Mayo breezed through three hitless frames and the Owls added two more runs in the sixth thanks to a sac fly by Pierce Gallo and a wild pitch allowing Kyte McDonald to score. Mauricio Rodriguez worked the final two innings to close out the win.
Up Next: The Owls will return to Reckling Park early on Wednesday morning to embark on a trip to Honolulu for a four-game series against Hawaii that begins on Friday.
