Shockers Edge Owls, 7-5
3/28/2024 11:27:00 PM | Baseball
11 am start on Friday
Wichita: Jack Riedel and Eric Correa homered to help Rice overcome a 4-0 deficit in the first inning, but Wichita State scored twice on an infield hit in the seventh inning to take a 7-5 win at Eck Stadium on Thursday night.
The Details: Wichita State scored four runs off starter Tucker Alch in the first inning, but Rice immediately began chipping away at that lead with a run in the top of the second when Nathan Becker scored on an infield hit by Correa, the first hit of his collegiate career. The Owls erased the remaining deficit in the third. Kyte McDonald, his first game against his former Shocker teammates, led off the inning with a single and then scored on Riedel's opposite field home run, his eighth of the year to set a career-high. One out later, Manny Garza stroked a single and then scored the tying run when Jacob Devenny's fly ball to left center was dropped. Rice then took the lead in the top of the fourth when Correa followed Riedel's lead and drilled an opposite field homer, the first of his career. The Shockers tied it in the bottom of the fourth on the Owls' third hit by pitch with the bases loaded. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Jack Riedel speared a sharp grounder with two outs and the bases loaded, but WSU's Jordan Rodgers just beat the throw, while two Shockers crossed the plate.
Up Next: The teams will be back in action early on Friday for an 11 a.m. start as part of a Kid's Day promotion. The series winds up on Saturday at noon.

Notes
- Rice fell to 9-17, 3-7 on the road, 1-3 in the ACC, 2-4 vs. Wichita State and 3-4 in series openers.
- Rice turned four double plays for the second time this season to increase its season total to 29… The last time the Owls turned more than four twin killings in a game was on 3/29/08 when they had five vs. Southern Miss in a 9-0 win at Reckling Park.
- Riedel's eight homers in his first 103 at-bats this season allowed him to surpass his total of seven last year (in 200 at bats).
- McDonald was 2x5 in his first game back at Eck Stadium to raise his career mark here to .383 (31x81) and his season average on the road in 2024 to .375 (15x40)… He has reached base in all 10 road games this season and hit in nine of 10.
- McDonald collected a pair of hits to give him a team-leading 10 multi-hit games this year… He came into the season with 13 in his career.
- Correa finished the night 2x3 with two RBI and a walk, posting his first career multi-hit and multi-RBI game.
