Eppley and Green Pace Owls Past McLennan

Final fall exhibition game
Austin Eppley and Cole Green collected three this each and Hiram Bocachica Jr. keyed a three-run seventh with a two-run single as Rice completed its 2024 fall exhibition season with a 9-4, 12-inning win over McLennan Community College at Reckling Park on Friday night.
Eppley opened the scoring for Rice in the bottom of the first with a double to score Colin Robson and his second homer in as many exhibition games gave Rice a 2-1 lead in the third. After McLennan tied the game 2-2 with a run in the top of the fifth, Robson pushed Rice ahead with a solo homer in the bottom of the six.
McLennan tied the game one last time in the top of the seventh before the Owls jumped in front to stay in the bottom of the frame.
Tobias Motley was hit by a pitch and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw before scoring on Gunnett Carlson's single. Green and Michael Zito followed with singles to load the based for Bocachica, who doubled to bring home both Carlson and Green.
Rice added a pair in the bottom of the eighth on a successful safety squeeze by Jacob Devenny and a single by Green.
Christian Salazar closed out the scoring for Rice with a solo homer in the 10th.
Eight Rice pitchers (J.D. McCracken, Von Baker, Tom Vincent, Jack Ben-Shoshan, Matt Zatopek, Blaine Brown, Reed Gallant, and Mark Perkins ) combined to strike out 18 while walking four and allowing six hits over 12 innings. Baker fanned four in 1.1 innings, while Brown struck out the side in the ninth.
