
Owls Fall in Hard-Fought Contest at Gonzaga

HOUSTON – The Rice women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought road contest 72-69 against Gonzaga Thursday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The loss snaps Rice's four-game win streak as the Owls move to 4-2 on the season.
Hailey Adams led the Owls with a career-high 20 points while adding nine rebounds and three assists. Emily Klaczek added 15 points, four steals, three assists and two rebounds, while Sussy Ngulefac rounded out the double-digit point scorers for Rice with 10 points and nine rebounds.
As a team, Rice shot 29-of-69 (42.0%) from the field and 4-of-15 (26.7%) from three-point range. Rice was 7-of-11 (63.6%) from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
A quick 5-0 by the Zags opened the game before Emily Klaczek got the Owls on the board with a layup. Trailing 11-5, Sussy Ngulefac and Adams hit back-to-back layups to pull Rice within two. After the Bulldogs extended their lead to seven, and Adams basket, followed by a Klaczek three-pointer, cut the deficit to two. Gonzaga led 21-16 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter
Adams picked up right where she left off in the first quarter with a basket to open the second frame. Victoria Flores brought Rice within one, with the two sides trading scores until Shelby Hayes gave the Owls their first lead at 28-27. After Gonzaga took back the lead, Dominique Ennis gave the led back to Rice with a layup. The Zags led 31-30 at halftime.
Third Quarter
Gonzaga got its lead to five before Ngulefac and Ennis got the Owls offense rolling again to bring the deficit back to one point. Jazzy Owens-Barnett gave the lead back to Rice after a driving layup, with the two sides trading the lead in the minutes to follow. Leading by one, Adams hit another shot to give Rice a three-point lead. Rice led 52-50 at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
Adams opened the final frame with a jumper to extend the lead to four before the Zags went on a quick run to tie the game. Klaczek drilled a three-pointer, followed by another Adams basket, to give Rice a five-point lead. With the game tied with four minutes remaining, an Adams free throw followed by a Ngulefac score put Rice up 64-61. The Bulldogs answered with a 10-0 run to take a 71-64 lead with under 30 seconds remaining. Ennis had the last points of the night with a three, but the Bulldogs held on for the three-point win.
