
Rice Falls to BYU at Cancun Challenge

CANCUN – The Rice women's basketball team fell in their opening game of the Cancun Challenge 63-51 to BYU on Thanksgiving Day at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. The Owls fall to 4-3 on the season, while the Cougars move to 6-1.
Dominique Ennis led the Owls with 12 points while adding five rebounds. Emily Klaczek and Sussy Ngulefac both recorded seven points, while Jill Twiehaus and Hailey Adams finished with six points each. Adams added a pair of career-highs with 13 rebounds and four blocks
As a team, Rice shot 19-of-61 (31.1%) from the floor and 6-of-21 (28.6%) from three-point range.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After a pair of free throws before the tip gave BYU a 2-0 lead, Ennis drilled a three after the jump to put the Owls in front. Down by two, another Ennis three kickstarted a 9-0 run, with Klaczek also contributing to put Rice up 12-5. BYU closed the quarter with a run of its own to tie the game.
Second Quarter
Jazzy Owens-Barnett got the Rice offense started in the second quarter with a jumper. After another Cougar run put them up nine, Ennis snapped the run with a basket. Ngulefac later kept the deficit at seven points, but BYU extended the lead at the half, 31-22.
Third Quarter
Trailing by 10 in the opening minutes of the third, Adams cut the deficit to single digits with a jumper. After a BYU three extended the lead to 12 points, Victoria Flores' three, followed by Ngulefac's layup, brought the Owls within seven. The Cougars built their lead to 13 before Jill Twiehaus' three-pointer for her first career points made it a 10-point game. BYU led 47-35 at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
Another Cougar run extended the lead to 17 points before Twiehaus snapped the run with another three-pointer. After trading scores, Klaczek's and-one conversion brought the Owls within 14 points, but time was in favor of BYU as the Cougars went on to win 63-51.
Quick Notes
Adams had a career-high 13 rebounds and four blocks.

The Owls are back in action tomorrow afternoon against Vermont.
