COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Rice women's tennis lost in a close battle to Northwestern, 4-3, on Sunday as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Doubles: The Wildcats secured the doubles points by winning on courts two and three. At the first position, senior Federica Trevisan and graduate senior Chie Kezuka held a 6-5 lead when the doubles point was clinched.
Singles: In singles action, Northwestern extended their lead to 2-0 with a win at the third position. Kezuka then put the Owls on the board with a straight-sets victory at the fourth spot, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Darya Schwartzman then tied the match at 2-2, winning at the second position, 6-3, 7-5. After a three-set victory for the Wildcats on court six, Trevisan again responded for the Owls with a 7-5, 6-3 win at the No. 1 position to tie the match at 3-3. Northwestern then survived in three sets at the fifth position to secure the team victory.
Head coach Elizabeth Schmidt: "That was a really good competitive college tennis match with both teams leaving it all on the court. Of course, we are disappointed we weren't on the winning end of it. But our team took another step forward today and I know these early season tests will continue to help us grow and improve."
Up Next: The Owls remain on the road to take on Louisiana (0-1, 0-0 SBC) on Friday, February 2, at 4 p.m. CT.
