HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's cross country team raced to a second place team finish at the 47th annual Rice Invitational Friday evening. Rice finished the race with a three-way tie for second place with Texas A&M-CC and Stephan F. Austin.
Sophomore Amelie Attenborough led Rice with a second-place finish with a time of 14:36.0, pacing at 3:39/K. Following close behind was senior Ellie Schweiker, who placed seventh overall with a time of 15:02.0.
Besides Attenborough and Schweiker finishing in the top-10, Rice had four more finishing in the top 30: senior Katlyn Schmeltzer (15:19.3), sophomore Cici Calhoun (15:47.7), junior Maggie Forbes (15:49.6) and sophomore Kate Twede (16:00.7).
"For everybody that ran, I was really happy with the efforts," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "We have some freshman running unattached that will make the team better as well. Amelie has improved so much in a year, it is insane. Ellie had the best cross country race she has had in her Rice career. Kate Schmeltzer and Cici Calhoun are much better than last year. I am very happy about where we are right now, and we just got to get through the heat, and keep making progress."
The Owls will now prepare for their second race of the season at the Incarnate Word Invite this upcoming Saturday, Sept. 16, in San Antonio.
