9/8/2023 9:11:00 PM | Men's Cross Country
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's cross country team captured a season-opening team win at the 47th annual Rice Invitational Friday evening. Four Owls raced to a top-5 finish, and seven in the top-20. This also marked the sixth-straight Rice Invitational team title for the men's team.
Freshman Gus Gannon secured a second place finish at the 5200m in his Rice cross country debut, running a time of 15:51.4, performing at a 3:03/K pace.
Following closely behind for the Blue and Gray were junior Elliot Metcalf (15:57.2), junior Tyler Strothman (16:05.02) and senior Grant Samara (16:07.4), who finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Sophomore Will McDermott (16:21.4) placed ninth, resulting in five Owls finishing in the top-10 overall.
"That was excellent," said Rice head coach Jon Warren. "We had a good showing from Gus, Elliot, Tyler and Grant, which is surprising given where we are in the year… It was a really solid performance and a good start."
The Owls will now have the rest of the month to prepare for the Chile Pepper Festival at Fayetteville, AR on Friday, Sept. 29.
