
Cross Country Opens 2023 Season with Rice Invitational

HOUSTON – Rice men's and women's cross country teams open their 2023 campaigns Friday, Sept. 8 when they host the 47th annual Rice Invitational at the Rice Intramural Fields. The women's 4000m race begins at 6:45 p.m. and will be followed by the men's four-mile race at approximately 7:15 p.m.
The women's cross country team is coming off a season where they finished third at the C-USA Championships. Taigen Hunter-Galvan returns this season after finishing 11th at the C-USA meet last year, earning Second Team All-Conference honors. Rice finished ninth at the NCAA South-Central regional, where Hunter-Galvan earned All-Region honors with a 19th-place finish.
This season, Rice was picked to finish ninth in the NCAA South-Central region in the USTFCCCA Preseason Polls.
The men's team comes off a fourth-place finish at the C-USA Championships a season ago and returned both Elliot Metcalf and Travis Dowd, who earned All-Conference honors. Rice had a top-10 finish in the NCAA South-Central regional, finishing eighth, after being projected to finish 14th.
The Owls were selected to finish sixth in the NCAA South-Central region in the USTFCCCA Preseason Polls.
