HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team will have a strong showing in Sacramento, Calif for the NCAA West Preliminaries starting Wednesday, May 24.
Rice had a great weekend in Denton for the C-USA Championships, amassing 120.5 points finishing third in the conference. The showing marked the first time the Owls scored 100-plus points in back-to-back seasons since the 2010 and 2011 championships. Alexander Slinkman and Sam Welsh are coming off of record-breaking showings at the C-USA Championships, with Slinkman setting the pole vault record and Welsh breaking the discus record.
The NCAA West Preliminary meet is one of two regional events, which serve as the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Athletes gain entry into the competition by having one of the top-48 best marks of the region (East or West) in their respective events. In order to advance to the final round in Austin, Texas, an athlete must finish among the top-12 (per region) in their respective events.
