DENTON – The Rice men's track and field team closed strong at the 2023 Conference USA Championships in Denton, Texas, finishing third overall.
Sam Welsh picked up right where he left off yesterday by winning the shot put, his first throws for the event all season, to claim his second event title of the championships (discus, shot put). Elian Ahmar was close behind with a third-place finish while Jorge Hinojosa finished eighth.
Corbett Fong added additional points for the Owls with a seventh-place finish in the javelin.
On the track, Gus Gannon placed eighth in the 1500m while Thomas Ma had a seventh-place showing in the 400m Hurdles. Elliot Metcalf took eighth in the 5000m while the 4x100 and 4x400 placed seventh and sixth, respectively.
The Owls ended with 120.5 points, marking the first time Rice surpassed 100 points in back-to-back championships since 2010 and 2011 C-USA Championships.
Postmeet Reaction from head coach Jon Warren:
"Pretty impressing meet. This has to be one of the best field event performances in C-USA track history. Rice had two meet records (pole vault and discus), an NCAA finals qualifier in the decathlon and conference champs in the hammer throw, pole vault, discus and shot put. Plus medalists and top finishes in many other events. Very exciting day. Sam Welsh and Alexander Slinkman set meet records and Sam went on to win the shot put after doing so. Also Grant Levesque has the 9th best decathlon mark in the NCAA. It was a very exciting weekend and I am super proud of all these guys."
