HOUSTON — After setting career-highs for strikeouts and innings pitched, Parker Smith has been named Conference USA's Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Smith becomes the first Owl to earn Pitcher of the Week honors since Evan Kraveth on May 13, 2019.
Smith combined with Matthew Linskey to blank FAU 1-0, the first home shutout by a conference opponent at FAU since 2017. Smith worked 8.2 innings on 114 pitches (81 for strikes) and did not walk a batter while striking out nine. He scattered seven hits but only allowed one runner to reach second base.
After Nolan Schanuel and Jackson Ross scratched out back-to-back singles in the fourth. Smith responded with back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. Smith's outing was the longest by a Rice pitcher since Matt Canterino tossed a complete game versus FIU on April 5, 2019 and it was the first 1-0 win by Rice since Mar. 14, 2021 against Kansas State.
