Doubles improves to 14-5
College Station: The 66th-ranked Rice continued its season-long run of strong doubles play, but 25th-ranked Texas A&M asserted itself in singles to win its 10th straight against the Owls and end their eight-match winning streak.
Doubles: Rice stormed to the early lead with wins at the first two lines. Wes Barnett and Trinity Grear gave the Owls the early advantage by downing the Aggies 39th ranked duo of Trey Hilderbrand and Noah Schachter, 6-3. Santiago Navarro and Campbell Salmon followed with a 6-4 win at the second line to improve the Owls' season mark to 14-5 in doubles and their combined mark to 31-14.
Singles: Texas A&M tied the match with a win at the fourth line but Wes Barnett responded with a straight-set win over 104th-ranked Pierce Rollins to give the Owls their last lead, 2-1, but the Aggies used the momentum of winning five of six first sets in singles to gather the four points needed for the win. Trinity Grear shook off a first-set loss to Schachter, who is also ranked 39th in singles, to win a tiebreak in the second set and force a third with the match ending at 1-1 when the Aggies clinched.
Up Next: The Owls return home to George R. Brown Tennis Center next Saturday at 11 a.m. to host UTSA as part of a combined match with the women's team who will face SMU.
