Owls head to Middle Tennessee next weekend
The Details: Ryland Urbanczyk made his first career start for the Owls and worked two scoreless innings, striking out the side in the first around a pair of walks and working around a hit batter and a walk in the second. Rice put runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings, but missed several opportunities to take the early lead by going 0x8 with runners in scoring position. Matthew Linskey relieved Urbanczyk in the third and worked two scoreless before the 49ers exploded for five runs in the fifth. They tacked on a sixth run in the six but Rice cut the margin to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Connor Walsh opened the inning with a walk and then came home to score on Guy Garibay Jr.'s first triple of the year. He came home when Manny Garza slapped a single between first and second, but the Owls could muster only one infield hit over the final three innings while the 49ers scored three in the seventh and seven in the ninth inning to finish with their highest run output in 25 games against Rice.
Notes
- The Owls were swept in a series for the second time this year and the first since the three games at Stanford, 2/24-25.
- Rice is now 2-6 in weekend series and 3-4 on Sundays.
- The loss was the sixth straight for the Owls against the 49ers.
- Four of Rice's seven hits were doubles, one shy of the season best of five at Sam Houston on 2/28.
- Rice pitchers fanned a season-high 13, the most by the Owls since they fanned 13 at Marshall last season.
- Garibay was 2x4 with a double and a triple. He was 4x11 with two doubles and a triple in the series and it now hitting. .345 in his career vs. Charlotte (10x29).
Up Next: Rice be off until opening a three-game series at Middle Tennessee next Friday. The Owl return home to Reckling Park on April 28 to open a three-game series against Dallas Baptist.
