MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Rice was limited to four hits in a game that began Friday night and went into Saturday, as the Owls dropped a 6-0 decision to Middle Tennessee in the opening game of the series.
Middle Tennessee grabbed an early lead in the first inning. Eston Snider led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. After moving to third on a fly ball, he came in on Brett Coker's groundout.
Jack Riedel led off the third inning with a single through the right side. Paul Smith then hit a rocket, but it was right at the first baseman who caught it and stepped on first for the double play. Jacob Devenny ended the inning with a grounder to second.
Blake Brogdon came on in the fifth inning and Jackson Galloway took his first pitch over the left center field wall. Three batters later, Vinson singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Snider then beat out a grounder to short, scoring Vinson, just before a lightning delay began at 7:17 p.m.
The game continued at 3 p.m. Saturday. Rice threatened in the top of the seventh. Pierce Gallo led off with a double to left field and moved to third two batters later. But Drew Holderbach couldn't hold up his swing on strike three, stranding Gallo at the corner.
Middle Tennessee added three runs in the eighth to close the scoring.
