
Owls Drop Road Contest to SFA

NACOGDOCHES – After a third-quarter comeback brought the Owls within two to start the final quarter, the Rice women's basketball team fell on the road to Stephen F. Austin 67-56 Saturday afternoon.
Destiny Jackson led the Owls with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Kennedy Clifton finished with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Malia Fisher added 10 points with five rebounds and two assists while Shelby Hayes also had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
As a team, Rice shot 19-of-64 (29.7%) and 1-of-16 (6.3%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 17-of-21 (81.0%) showing from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Jackson netted the game's first points before SFA went on a 15-0 run, forcing an early Rice timeout. Jazzy Owens-Barnett snapped the run with back-to-back baskets, but the Ladyjacks were able to extend their lead back to 12 points. Maya Bokunewicz brought the Owls within 10 at 18-8 to close out the opening quarter.
Second Quarter
After SFA grabbed its largest lead of the day at 25-10, Fisher and Hailey Adams sunk back-to-back shots to bring the deficit to 11. Trailing 28-19, Fisher hit another shot to bring the Owls within seven, but the Ladyjacks were able to push their lead back to double digits at 34-23 at halftime.
Third Quarter
After trading scores to open the third, Clifton's jumper kickstarted a quick 6-0 run to get Rice within five. Following an SFA score, Hayes and Jackson brought the Owls within three at 38-35, with Fisher later bringing Rice within one. SFA pushed the lead back to four, but Jackson was able to get Rice within two at 45-43 entering the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The Ladyjacks grabbed the first basket of the fourth with Emily Klaczek responding to keep Rice within two. Trailing by five, Jackson hit a floater to get Rice within three, but SFA responded with a 6-0 run to take a 56-47 lead. Clifton's three cut the deficit to six, but SFA was able to take the 67-56 win.
