Eight Owls slated to compete
DRAWS
Houston- Eight members of the Rice men's tennis team will take on the best collegiate players in the state of Texas this weekend as the ITA Texas Men's Regional begins play at TCU's Bayard Friedman Tennis Center on Thursday.
Details: Petro Kuzmenok, Eduardo Morais and Kabeer Kapasi will be in action on Thursday morning in the opening rounds of qualifying for the main singles draw, hoping to join teammates Arthus de la Bassetiere, Trinity Grear, Emir Sendogan, and Yasha Zemel. They will be joined by Santiago Navarro in doubles. Winners in both singles and doubles will advance to the ITA Winter Fall National Championship, November 1-5 in San Diego California.
Efe Ustundag: "The good thing is we are taking eight, healthy guys to the tournament, so that's exciting. This has to be one of the toughest and deepest regions in the country and while a couple of guys who have already qualified for nationals because of their rankings might not be in the field, it's still gonna be one heck of a tournament. Since we had three seniors playing at the top of the lineup for a lot of last spring, we're trying to some new teams in doubles. We'll see how that turns out, but we feel pretty good about what we've got in terms of competitive level. In this tournament, sometimes it's a bit of a luck of the draw as to if things going your way, but I'm excited about this weekend."
