Owls Continue Strong Start to 2023 Season
1/28/2023 10:11:00 AM | Men's Track & Field
HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team had another strong showing at the Houston Invitational at the University of Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse.
The Owls took home several event wins with Nick Hicks winning in the weight throw and Elliot Metcalf winning the 3000-meter run. Rice also saw 13 top 10 finishes, with eight being in the top five.
Rice returned to a more full lineup at the Houston Invitational, after only competing with about half of the team last week.
Post Meet Reaction - Head Coach Jon Warren
"The meet had many highlights today. Nick Hicks winning the weight throw with a couple of season bests. Shaun Kerry, also in the weight throw, placed well and posted the two best throws of his life. The 3000 was also a good event with Elliot Metcalf winning and Gus Gannon going 1-2 running 8:14 and 8:15 respectively. The pole vault and shot put were also very solid events. Alexander Slinkman was 2nd in the vault and Javier Alatorre had a new personal best as well. Elian Ahmar and Jorge Hinojosa went 2-3 in the shot put. That was not everything (we also made strides in the 400, 800, mile and other events), but I think it shows that we are in a good spot for this time of the year."
